
Demi and Ashton joined the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon on a panel at the launch of the United Nations Global Plan Against Trafficking in Persons and Victim’s Trust Fund. The trust fund will provide “humanitarian, legal and financial aid to victims of trafficking in persons” and is one of the largest initiatives of its kind globally. Demi and Ashton spoke about modern-day slavery and what UN member countries can do to help prevent slavery and protect victims. Contributions pledged by world governments, foundations, and the private sector were announced after the panel. In attendance were ambassadors from UN member countries, UN officials, NGO leaders fighting trafficking, trafficking survivors, law enforcement officials, academics, students, private sector leaders, and journalists. The panel was moderated by New York Times journalist Nicholas Kristof.
